The Future of 200+ For Profit Institutions

ACICS, a national accreditor that oversaw 245 institutions, many of them for-profits, recently received a lifeline from Senior Judge Reggie B. Walton. On Friday, the judge rejected a majority of the agency’s claims, but found enough flaws in the government’s review of the case to order a new hearing.

Since 2016, many for-profit schools have closed (Corinthian Colleges, ITT Technical Institute) or struggled to increase enrollment given the shadow of a few bad actors. For-profit colleges experienced a 10.1 percent decline in 2017, following a dip of 9.3 percent in 2016.

It’s worth noting that a majority of ACICS accredited for-profit schools have received accreditation from alternative accrediting bodies since this decision, but the enrollment struggle continues. In fact, as of February 2018, only around 19 schools are currently affected by the lack of an ACICS accreditation.
